Rialto Residency

Continuing its long and successful collaboration with the Platres Community Council, the Cyprus Rialto World Music Festival continues its activities of Rialto Residency.

The Rialto Residency, for the second consecutive year, under the artistic director of the well-known Greek musician Michalis Cholevas, focusing on techniques, forms and stylistic elements of traditions in the eastern Mediterranean. The participant artists will present the result of the residency in a concert music on 29th July at Glafkos Clerides Square in Platres.

On Sunday July 30th, the successful unplugged concert of Calidonia moves to the beautiful neighboring area of the Medieval Bridge of Milia.

Michalis Cholevas is a Greek multi-instrumentalist musician playing Ney, Saz, Yayli Tanbur and its descendant, the Tarhu. His path starts in Athens, Greece where he studied Byzantine, Jazz and Eastern Mediterranean music traditions. At the age of 30 he moved to the Netherlands to follow a Master’s program in Turkish Music at Rotterdam World Music Academy, where he now works as the Head of Studies. Michalis studied with Ömer Erdoğdular, Kudsi Ergüner and Erdal Erzincan and he specializes in the eastern Mediterranean modal music traditions. He has collaborated with several artists including the ensemble of Kudsi Ergüner, the composer Angelo Badalamenti, Apollo Musagette Quartet, Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra, the George Kontrafouris Jazz trio and Louisiana Red. Michalis holds a Bachelor's Degree in Natural Sciences which was followed by Master studies in advanced Theoretical Physics. He currently teaches at Codarts, University for the Αrts, Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

The Cypriot musicians participating in this year’s Rialto Residency are Andreas Lardis - Violin, Vasilis Filippou - Vocals and Percussion, Panagiotis Tsappis - Ney, Marianna Moumtzi - Canon and Stelios Pantehis - Lute.
