The curtain of the Cyprus Contemporary Dance Festival opens this year with two works that stand out at the last Cyprus Dance Platform. These are the works: ANNNA by Alexandra Waierstall and 10’ by Elena Alexandrou.

ANNNA -  ALEXANDRA WAIERSTALL 20’

In ANNNA, Alexandra Waierstall creates a physical landscape where movement is weaved like a long breath through ever changing relations of sound and silence, fast shape shifting movements and stillness, where various, yet never definite spaces and images, emerge. With dancer Anna Pehrsson, musician Volker Bertelman (Hauschka) and visual artist Marianna Christo des, she moves through the archaeology of deeper layers of futuristic utopia that is still to be de ned. In each choreographic approach, place and time are undented and the here and now is generated between vague hints of the future and the bodily presence of the dancer. Softly pulsating, the performer Anna Pehrsson passes through die rent states referring to what could have or will be.

Alexandra Waierstall, born in England and raised in Cyprus, is a graduate of ArteZ Arnhem (The Netherlands), where she received her master’s degree in Choreography. She has received numerous choreographic awards both in Cyprus and Germany, including the 2013 Most Promising Artist award from the City of Düsseldorf. Alexandra’s choreographic work has been selected and supported by networks such as Aerowaves, Modul dance, IDEE - Initiatives in Dance through European Exchange and Chin-A- moves. In 2012, Alexandra was analyst for the Rolex Mentor and Protége Award. She presented her choreographic works in Europe, Canada, Brazil, Korea andChina. Between2014 - 2016, Alexandra Waierstall was a Factory Artist at the Tanzhaus NRW in Düsseldorf, Germany.

10’ - ELEANA ALEXANDROU 10’

The work 10’ was made for the Cyprus Contemporary Dance Platform 2017 and was presented in March 2017.  As the choreographer says, “The fact that I took part in the Cyprus Contemporary Dance Platform was quite unexpected.  I’m not a ‘normal’ dancer (according to the festival’s standards).  As it was the first time I participated as a choreographer, I had ten minutes.  Ten minutes is all I have today as well. I will do my best to communicate, within this timeframe, my sense of alertness about the times we currently live in, as well as my need to enter into a dialogue with the organisers of institutions like the Platform but also other festivals of dance and choreography.  I have a lot of questions about my role as an artist and the role of art in general, especially the role of this ‘incomprehensible’ dance - as my dad likes to call it.”

Eleana Alexandrou obtained the DasArts Master of Theatre from the Amsterdam School of Arts in 2016.  In 2009 she completed her BA in Dance and Choreography at Bath Spa University, UK. She has been working as a performer since 2004 and making her own work since 2011.  She presented work at the Open House Festival of Dance House Lemesos, the Athens Festival, the Come Together Festival of Amsterdam and the B.Motion of Operaestate in Italy.  A close collaborator of the Center of Performing Arts MITOS, Dance House Lemesos and .pelma.lia haraki.  With Arianna Marcoulides and Eva Korae she founded bytheway productions, a dance, theatre and applied arts company.  Since January 2017, she is the president of the organisation Cyprus New Movement of Dance Companies, Dancers and Choreographers.
