22ο Φεστιβάλ Σύγχρονου Χορού Κύπρου

The Festival that has been established as the greatest and most important contemporary dance event of Cyprus returns to the Rialto Theatre this June.

Contemporary dance aficionados will have a unique opportunity to discover and admire exceptional dance performances from eight different countries, reflecting contemporary dance trends, schools and movements, thus building bridges between the local and the international choreographic production.

There are 7 + 1 reasons why June is justifiably the month of Dance. There are also seven performances in this 2019 edition, representing the latest trends in contemporary movement, from hip hop to the dominance of multimedia, with the eighth performance proposing an interactive event - a ‘party’ mainly addressed to children.

Most performances highlight modern issues whilst showcasing the work of important choreographers and covering a broad thematic that focuses on social, political and existential issues. Almost all choreographic works clearly reflect the impact and fusion of arts, as well as the increasing role of multimedia and technology. In the same spirit, it is important to note that the Festival’s programme will be enriched by the presence of Russell Maliphant, one of the most renowned and internationally acclaimed choreographers, who will host an open workshop for dance professionals, dancers and teachers.

The Cyprus Contemporary Dance Festival develops and expands with a series of parallel events that bring a festive mood to the festival. At the same time, it continues last year’s innovative initiative of adding a performance for children: titled Party, this year’s event for young spectators comes all the way from Germany and offers to all participants - adults and kids alike - a rare opportunity to cross the borders of language and culture, and dance to the max!

To facilitate the transportation of spectators from other cities, there will be free bus service from Nicosia and Paphos to the Rialto Theatre.

PERFORMANCES PROGRAM

2/6 If You Could See Me Now Arno Schuitemaker The Netherlands
The 22nd Cyprus Contemporary Dance Festival begins with a choreography by Arno Schuitemaker. The performance sets a chilled-out club dance into one dizzying wave-like motion. The three performers see no limits to what they take out of their bodies, propelled by the rhythm of the beat.

4/6 Tracks Compagnie Zahrbat Brahim Bouchelaghem France
With Brahim Bouchelaghem, hip hop is confronted with jazz music and contemporary dance in the thick of the Roaring Twenties. The piece is a breath-taking mix, which brings together a former jazzman, an ambitious singer, a lost musician and a brigand.

6/6 Swish Tereza Hradilkova Filip Misek and coll Czech Republic
Tereza Hradilková fascinated by the ease with which the boxers jump over the rope, their rhythm and the interplay of their hands and feet, she started exploring her own boundaries. The jump rope is more than just a children’s game; it also symbolizes ambition, desire for performance, self-improvement.

10/6 Tamata Fotis Nikolaou Cyprus
Alone and with a sense of defeat and loss of belief, six men are seeking for their new faith. In a timeless and lonely landscape, they struggle violently, but at the same time quietly, to rediscover their body, their truth... the light. The bodies fall, hug, tremble, shake, sway, crave, promise and sacrifice in a poetic journey for the search of identity..

12/6 Speechless Fingersix Sofia Mavragani - Greece
A dance performance on the borders of theatre and music; a poetic swarming speech unwinding the thread of the female narrative on stage. Speechless is inspired by public speeches, manifestos, articles and texts, bringing to the fore the fragmentary and unofficial voice of women as it has travelled through the centuries before reaching the present day.

14/6 inaudible Zoo Thomas Hauert - Switzerland
In his work, Swiss-Belgian choreographer Thomas Hauert touches the common ground between dance and music taking the notion of ‘interpretation’ as a starting point for this group performance for six dancers.

16/6 PARTY Alfred Zinola Maxwell McCarthy Germany (18:00, 6+)
An interactive performance where the public and performers dance together. Party takes everybody to the max, to dance till drop, and then enter a new world together. With PARTY the borders of language and culture are crossed and everybody and every child is part of the party.

22/6 Silent Lines Russell Maliphant Dance Company United Kingdom
The 22nd Cyprus Contemporary Dance Festival concludes with one of the most important contemporary dance companies of the UK. Silent Lines draws upon Maliphant’s studies and explorations in dance and anatomy using a unique mix of movement, projection, and lighting.

22/6 Workshop with Russell Maliphant (11:30 – 13:30)
