The play by Argentine playwright Claudio Tolcachir tells the story of a large family and the difficulties of coexistence. All members of this family are in some way forced to live under the same roof, where violence is the only means of communication, and without realising the gravity of the situation that they find themselves in. The person that links all the members together is the grandmother; her role, the support of others and the sense of reassurance that prevails when the situation gets out of line. With her sudden passing, which marks the absense of a connecting link between the family members, the situation begins to unravel. Each and every member decides to ‘escape’ this reality, forsaking the others. Director Maria Kyriakou underlines: the play is inspired by real life. Its characters were not created in the playwright’s imagination, but in his own house. And by that I don’t mean Claudio Tolcachir’s biological family, but the one he chose instead, his team and actors, with whom he lived under the same roof for a stretched amount of time, in order to document the relationships that were brought about through their daily interactions. The play, which even from a first read creates a sense of familiarity that brings about fear and longing at the same time, is the result of this documentation. That delicate balance held by the structure of family, is what draws us to the need for safety which we are looking for, but also frightens us more than anything. The characters of this play reaffirm that nothing is black or white in human relationships and that the only truth lies within the gray shades of our weaknesses and our desires. I know the Coleman family, just as you do too. «The Omission of the Coleman Family» is a chance to admit just that, by realising through the characters what is never said and what should always remain a secret in order to be able to tolerate one another.’
