Plácido Domingo adds yet another role to his legendary Met career as Luisa’s father in this rarely performed Verdi gem, a heart-wrenching tragedy of fatherly love. Met Music Director Emeritus James Levine conducts a revival of Luisa Miller, which has not been seen at the Met since 2006.

Luisa Miller premiered in Naples, at Teatro di San Carlo in 1849, and represents a transitional moment in Giuseppe Verdi’s unparalleled career. While reminiscent of the youthful vitality that had made Verdi an international sensation, the opera also looks forward to the dramaturgical discipline and sophistication of the composer’s middle period. The story centres on the bond between a father and his daughter as they stand together against a hostile world.

Starring Sonya Yoncheva as a peasant girl, Luisa, opposite Piotr Beczala as Rodolfo in Verdi’s tragedy about a young woman who sacrifices her own happiness in an attempt to save her father’s life. Directed by Elijah Moshinsky, the cast also stars Plácido Domingo, Olesya Petrova and Alexander Vinogradov and Dmitry Belosselskiy.
