The film was awarded in 2017 by the European Parliament and the 1st screening in Cyprus and Greece after the award will take place at Rialto Theatre, Tuesday January 9th.

In an effort to boost the distribution of European films in Europe, while opening a debate on major social issues, the European Parliament established the Lux Film Prize in 2007. Regarding the European Film Award which was awarded to Sami Blood in 2017, a co-production of Sweden, Norway and Denmark directed by Amanda Kernell.

The film refers to the Sami community living in the northern part of Sweden, which in the 1930s is receiving racist behaviour and treated as an ethnological curiosity. Now that acceptance of all sorts of diversity is a major issue for the European societies and not just societies, the film deals with a hot issue and opens a debate on cultural and linguistic diversity.

More specifically, the film follows the life of Elle Marja, a fourteen-year-old girl, a member of the Sami community - the native of Scandinavia engaged in reindeer farming. Elle becomes a victim of racist behavior in her boarding school where she is studying and in order to acquire the life she is dreaming of, she is forced to become another person and break any relationship with her family and her own culture.

Amanda Kernell, born in 1986, graduated in film directing from The National Film School of Denmark in 2013. Since 2006, Amanda has directed several acclaimed shorts including Stoerre Vaerie, the pilot for Sámi Blood which premiered at Sundance, was nominated for the Swedish Guldbagge for best short 2015 and has won several awards like the audience award at GIFF, Bestshort in Uppsala, etc.

Director’s comment

Many older Samis left everything behind and became Swedish and I’ve always wondered; what happens to you if you cut all ties with your culture and history? And can you really become someone else? Sami Blood is a declaration of love to those who left and stayed – told from Elle Marja’s perspective. I wanted to make a film where we see the Sami society from within, a film where we experience this dark part of Swedish colonial history in a physical way. A film with yoik and blood.

The movie was awarded with the European Parliament LUX Film Prize 2017.
