Naïve young Bess falls deeply in love with Jan, an experienced oil-rig worker. When a tragic accident leaves Jan paralysed, he fears Bess will sacrifice her own happiness and urges her to seek intimacy elsewhere. Her attempt to fulfil his wishes becomes a profound exploration of love, faith and self-sacrifice.
