11th Cyprus Rialto World Music Festival
Rialto Theatre celebrates eleven years since it first introduced a series of open air, musical events on Heroes Square open to the public, and aiming at the development of the culture of tolerance and acceptance in a multicultural world. Ever since, the colorful Ethnic Festival grew and differentiated from its initial form, changing its name to Cyprus Rialto World Music Festival, yet remaining a meeting point for music groups and sounds of the world.
In this year’s edition we will have the chance to attend and listen to groups from the local music area. Besides, this year the festival was oriented from the outset in a more determing participation from Cypriot groups, in order to give them the chance to present authentic and original music dedicated to World Music. After the open call for proposals, five groups were been selected for the 11th Cyprus Rialto World Music Festival: Fado Mediterraneo, Havana Noche, Santuto, gav and Monsieur Doumani. (The performance of Monsieur Doumani has been rescheduled for the 14th of July).
Moreover, Cypriots are also the musicians who, under the guidance of the Greek artist Michael Cholevas will participate in Rialto Residency 2016, which has a matter of improvisation and composition in the Eastern Mediterranean traditions.
Although this year focuses mainly in Cyprus, the festival does not leave the international character, by hosting the performance Ethno Cyprus in which about 40 young people from European and Arab countries are participating and the ten member group “Bulgara” from our neighboring country Bulgaria.
By this way it continues to be a multicolor musical meeting in which not only musicians from different countries will meet, but also visitors from all nationalities will full - fill the Heroes Square.
The scene of the festival will be transported across to the Heroes Square, for all the festival events, which are open to the public. Music thus emerge with common origins and influences that draw their inspiration from the tradition of each country and of course Cyprus is the bridge bond between them.
