Stavros Mantis was born in Nicosia, Cyprus. He started his musical studies playing the bassoon and was a member of the Cyprus State Youth Orchestra from 1992-1999. After obtaining a Master’s degree in Electronic Engineering at the University of Manchester, he took his first lessons in classical singing with tenor Ioannis Finas in Athens. Not long after, he moved to Italy, determined to become an opera singer. Ever since, he has studied privately with Sherman Lowe, to then shift to the renowned Venetian tenor Gianfranco Cecchele and then to Teresa Perdoncin, who still coaches him to this day.

Mr. Mantis has also participated in a plethora of master classes in and out of Italy and has won numerous international singing contests. He has frequented various music academies, the most significant of which Accademia del Teatro Stabile e Teatro Regio di Torino.

He made his first stage debut in April 2008 in the role of Masetto (Don Giovanni) under the baton of Claudio Desderi at Teatro Alfieri of Asti (Piedmont). Since then, he debuted in various other roles such as Don Giovanni and Leporello (Don Giovanni), Papageno (The Magic Flute – sung in Greek), Giorgio Germont (La Traviata), Marcello (La Boheme), Marco and Berto (Gianni Schicchi), Barone Scarpia (Tosca – in concert form), Belcore (L’elisir d’amore), to name just a few.

Mr. Mantis possesses a full, warm and dark baritone voice, a good extension both in the low and high ranges and relatively good agility. His voice is most appreciated in Verdi and Verismo repertoire as well as some Belcanto roles, although he performs equally well in ‘lighter’ repertoires.

In January 2017, after winning the VI Edition of the City of Ferrara International Singing Contest, he made his stage debut at the Teatro Comunale di Mantova as Sharpless (Madama Butterfly), to later repeat this role in various cities throughout Italy. In August 2018 he debuted in the role of Alfio (Cavalleria Rusticana) in Messina, Sicily, where he is to perform again in August 2019, in his stage debut as Barone Scarpia.

Mr. Mantis has a busy concert activity in and out of Italy, with repertoire ranging from opera to lieder, French chansons and Neapolitan and Venetian songs, as well as Greek and Cypriot art and folk songs. His most recent concert activity was with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra in June 2018 at the “Italian Opera Gala” at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, Cyprus, under the baton of Jens Georg Bachmann.
