“When medicine can no longer save you, you can still be saved by humour and imagination”. Relevant to our days and profoundly humane, Oscar and the Lady in Pink tells a story about life itself, offering a message of hope despite the gravity of its subject.
Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt’s work is a heartfelt narrative about life, full of sensitivity and humour, seen through the eyes of a little boy. It is a short masterpiece of ultimate simplicity and depth, a poignant and deeply humane tale.
Oscar, the protagonist, is a ten-year-old boy suffering from leukemia who is hospitalised in a children’s clinic. His condition being terminal, doctors have exhausted all options for treating the disease. In an attempt to face fear and loneliness, he develops a special bond with the Lady in Pink who volunteers for the hospital. Mamie-Rose helps Oscar see life from a new perspective and proposes that he write letters to God as a way of communicating and expressing his emotions.
Through these letters, Oscar shares his thoughts on life, love, and death. The Lady in Pink invents a game: from this day onwards, every day counts for ten years. In this way, he has the opportunity to experience all stages of life – to be an adolescent, to fall in love, to get married, and to grow old.
The work explores profound existential themes such as mortality and the need to be loved, emphasising the importance of living fully in each moment. It offers an optimistic perspective on life, even in the most challenging of times, encouraging viewers to reflect on the true essence of life.
