Mariano De Santis is the President of the Italian Republic, a widower and a Catholic. As his term draws to a close, amid uneventful days, two final duties arise: deciding on two delicate petitions for a presidential pardon.
Director and screenwriter Paolo Sorrentino was born in Naples in 1970 and was orphaned at the age of 16, when he lost both his parents. At 25, after several years of study at the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Naples Federico II, he decided to pursue a career in the film industry. His debut feature L’uomo in più (2001), starring Toni Servillo and Andrea Renzi, was selected for the Venice Film Festival, received three David di Donatello nominations, and won the Nastro d’Argento for Best First Film. In 2004, he directed Le conseguenze dell’amore, which was selected in Competition at Cannes and widely acclaimed. The film won five David di Donatello awards, including Best Film, Director, and Screenplay. His subsequent films, including L’amico di famiglia (2007) and Il Divo (2008), were also selected in Competition at Cannes. Il Divo won the Jury Prize at Cannes and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Make-up, along with numerous Italian awards. In 2014, La grande bellezza won the Academy Award, Golden Globe, and BAFTA for Best Foreign Language Film, as well as five European Film Awards. Youth (2015) received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song and two Golden Globe nominations, winning three European Film Awards. Sorrentino has also published a novel, Hanno tutti ragione (2010), shortlisted for the Premio Strega, and two short story collections. He created the television series The Young Pope (2016). In 2021, The Hand of God won the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival.
