One of William Shakespeare’s most celebrated and exuberant comedies returns to THOC’s Main Stage, thirty-one years after its first staging, in a stimulating new interpretation by British Shakespearean director Owen Horsley.

In Illyria, in Olivia’s once cheerful and glamorous but now faded seaside bar, Viola is shipwrecked. Believing that her twin brother has been lost, she disguises herself as a man and enters the service of Duke Orsino. From this moment, the threads of a complex and tangled story begin to unravel, filled with misunderstandings and subversive turns: Viola is secretly in love with Orsino; Orsino longs for Olivia, who mourns her brother; and Olivia falls in love with Cesario—who is, in fact, Viola in disguise. One by one, the characters are overtaken by the intoxication of love, and this new breath of life shakes the foundations of an otherwise melancholic community. A group of schemers plots, deceives, and indulges in games, revealing both the enchanting and the darker sides of romantic transformation.

Owen Horsley’s adaptation blends sorrow and joy in a comic and eccentric creation, in which language reveals its dual nature, at times serving truth and at others deception. Horsley brings together a talented ensemble of performers and creatives, drawing on Shakespeare’s imaginative material, where movement, music, and song harmonise with the characters’ antics and emotional turbulence. The romantic tale of disguise, cross-dressing, and fluid identities is transformed into a vibrant celebration of love, overflowing with tenderness, mystery, laughter, tears, irony, and joyful madness.
