Following three consecutive, highly successful seasons at Metaxourgio in Athens, as well as tours across Greece and abroad, this acclaimed production comes to the Rialto Theatre’s stage. Nominated for the Karolos Koun Award for her performance, Yasemi Kilaidoni delivers a remarkable acting tour de force in a powerful monologue tracing the story of a generation that, during the turbulent decades of modern Greek history (1940–1970), chose to change the world at great personal cost. The production is directed by Fotis Makris. Marking the first-ever stage adaptation of Alki Zei’s iconic novel, the play tells the story of a woman who becomes the story of Greece itself.

The central protagonist, Achilles’ fiancée, turns to memory, the only path through which she can recount not only her own life but also the collective experience of her generation, in an attempt to make sense of history itself.

As her memories unfold, she revisits pre-war Greece, the dictatorship of 4 August, the Occupation, the Resistance, the Civil War, the post-war years and the military junta, while also touching upon issues that continue to resonate today, including migration and multicultural societies.

Adapted for the stage by Fotis Makris, Kleopatra Tologkou and Stella Krouska, the novel is woven from the intertwined threads of personal and collective history.

Ordinary people emerge as unwilling protagonists, or unsuspecting extras, in a national drama shaped by resistance, civil war and persecution. Great ideals give way to disillusionment; cherished certainties are shattered. It is the story of Greece, and of the world.

Standing at a turning point in both her own life and the country’s recent history, during the years of the dictatorship, Achilles’ fiancée pieces together her memories, fragment by fragment, composing a mosaic of three transformative decades.
