Les Lumières du Cinéma

Alliance Française de Limassol presents the concert Les Lumières du Cinéma: France and Europe in Music, a staged musical journey through European cinema with special reference to French and Francophone culture. The performance explores the deep relationship between music and the cinematic image, bringing to light emblematic melodies that marked the 20th century and continue to resonate within Europe’s shared cultural memory.

Three distinguished performers—pianist Stavros Dritsas, baritone Kyros Patsalides and singer Vakia Stavrou—join forces with a 14-piece orchestra, under the musical direction of pianist Stavros Dritsas and the original arrangements of Fotis Mousoulides. The ensemble approaches the repertoire with respect for the original compositions, while offering a renewed, contemporary interpretation.

The programme features songs and instrumental themes that defined the aesthetics of European cinema. From the melodies of Michel Legrand, Joseph Kosma, Francis Lai, and Georges Delerue, to the works of Nino Rota and Ennio Morricone, the performance unfolds a musical canvas closely connected to classic films and cherished cinematic memories. 

At the same time, the concert pays tribute to the great tradition of French songwriters, with references to Jacques Brel, Charles Aznavour, Édith Piaf and Kurt Weill. The musical journey also extends to the Mediterranean, featuring Greek compositions that achieved international recognition, such as Never on Sunday by Manos Hadjidakis and Zorba’s Dance by Mikis Theodorakis.
