“When people say ‘for your own good’, they actually mean ‘for my own good’, don’t you think?” Another Country by Julian Mitchell is a theatrical play that won the Society of West End Theatre Awards ‘Play of the Year’ title in 1982, originally performed by illustrious actors such as Kenneth Branagh, Rupert Everett, Daniel Day Lewis and Colin Firth.
Directed and translated by Andreas Araouzos, the play features ten Cypriot artists introducing the audience to a 1930s English private boarding school exploring the camaraderie and operation of the educational system through a staged reading.
The play portrays the system’s operation and discrimination, oppression, and appearances… notions that have only slightly changed since 1930. Guy Benett (a role based on spy Guy Burgess) and Tommy Judd become friends because both are considered outsiders: the former is a homosexual, and the latter a Marxist. The school and the system have traditional methods for the rebels: responsibility, guilt, opportunism, and exemplary punishment. How will the victims take care of themselves? How can idealists betray their principles? How can friends and supporters walk away from the wronged ones?
Cast: Panos Makris, Michalis Kazakas, Andreas Koutsoftas, Evros Vasiliou, Andreas Daniel, Charis Attonis, Yiorgos Evagorou, Nicos Kosonas, Andreas Araouzos and young Stephanos Lappas. Music: Dimitris Zachariou. Lighting design: Nicos Mylonas.
