“Finally, Damiens was dismembered.” (Revue de Paris, 2/6/1836)
Violence as a spectacle was a prominent feature of earlier societies’ cultures. Gradually, this “parade of a thousand deaths” is being abolished. The ritual of punishment now unfolds behind closed doors; it is no longer a public spectacle, and the once cheering crowd has transformed into a silent mob. However, violence remains a popular spectacle, offering its audience a sense of redemption.
A dance-theatre play inspired by the social issue of popular violence and outcry, which persists in our reality even within modern Western societies where we believe such practices have long disappeared. Yet, these forms of hidden violence continue to exist, cleverly disguised according to our habits and expressions, aligned with our modern, seemingly tranquil lives.
