Synopsis
In a crowded town square and under a blazing sun, a trade-unionist is assassinated. Suspicion falls on Sofianos, a former police collaborator who is now in disfavour. Sofianos tries in vain to prove his innocence. A friend of his who is a member of parliament visits him in his cell, and in desperation Sofianos takes him hostage, threatening to kill him unless he is released. It is the eve of the 1936 election, and the Metaxas government, barely clinging to power through a fragile compromise between Rightist and Centrist forces, finds itself in an extremely delicate position.
