In a crowded town square and under a blazing sun, a trade-unionist is assassinated. Suspicion falls on Sofianos, a former police collaborator who is now in disfavour. Sofianos tries in vain to prove his innocence. A friend of his who is a member of parliament comes to visit him in his cell, and, in desperation, Sofianos takes him hostage and threatens to kill him unless he is released. It is the eve of the 1936 election, and the Metaxas government, which is barely clinging to power thanks to a difficult compromise between the Rightist and Centrist powers, finds itself in an extremely delicate position.

Theo Angelopoulos (1935–2012) was a Greek film director and screenwriter. He studied law in Athens and film in Paris. He is considered one of the most important figures in European cinema. Among his most significant works are The Travelling Players (1975), Landscape in the Mist (1988), and Eternity and a Day (1998), which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival. His work received international awards and distinctions.
